Setting up a new School? - we can help

Setting up a new school is at one and the same time an extraordinary opportunity and a major challenge.  It is as much about developing a vision and winning hearts and minds as it is about developing a brief and working on detailed design.

Strategic vision – what is it you want your school to achieve?  How will you measure if you have achieved it?  Who should be involved in developing that vision?

Governance - who will be responsible for the strategic, non-executive oversight of the school’s direction?  What training will they need?  How will this fit within the context of local and national government?

Teaching and Learning – who will be responsible for leading teaching and learning, and maintaining professional excellence?  How much will learning be pupil-led and how much teacher-led? How will all students have equal access to high-quality learning? What role will technology, particularly ICT, play?  What impact will the answers to those questions have on the design of the school?

Curriculum – what are the basic building blocks?  Will the curriculum be age-related or progression-related?  How broad a curriculum can be delivered?  What role will vocational subjects play?  Who will be the awarding bodies for student qualifications?

Learning spaces – what is needed to support the vision, the learning philosophy, and the curriculum?  What does this mean for room sizes and numbers? How will teacher/pupil schedules make the most of the learning environment, both daily and across the year?

ICT – how will the ICT vision support the overall aims of the school?  What equipment/infrastructure will be required?  What training will staff and students need to capitalise on ICT investment?

Staffing – what is the staffing structure?  How will they be recruited? What are the policies for staff development and management?  How will they be involved in establishing the new school and developed to make best use of new and exciting facilities?

Pupil policies – what will the admissions policy be? What are the arrangements for student welfare?  How will pupils be transported to the school?

Academy Building

Cambridge Education can help you answer all these questions; we would not presume to know all the answers, but we have a wealth of experience from projects in this field.  From running vision workshops with sponsors, to designing timetables and recruiting staff, we can deliver an entire service, or we can provide targeted support in specialist areas.

Furthermore, in conjunction with our parent company, Mott MacDonald Group, we can offer a genuine one-stop shop for school development:

  • Funding – sources and management of funds to construct and run your school
  • Design – detailed design and development of the building, including mechanicals and electricals
  • Project and Construction Management – ensuring that the school is completed on time and on budget
  • Facilities management – taking the building beyond construction.
